Case Study

Meet Tom Guan – Retail Management Placement

“I joined Aldi on the Retail Management Placement Programme in 2021. I was immediately attracted to the role when I saw how practical it was. I thought having the opportunity to work in store for half a year would be brilliant and being able to interact with a variety of people was a great thing as well. I study Human Resources at Northumbria University, so I’m very much a people person. I want to take care of my staff and customers and that’s what really drew me to the programme. I did my research, got stuck in and within three or four weeks my responsibilities increased from Store Assistant to Deputy Store Manager.

During the year, I also got the chance to be involved with projects that make a real impact on the business. Knowing they give you this opportunity to get involved is really inspiring.
I didn’t have any retail experience, but for me, hard work beats anything. You’ll need to be someone who’s driven and be willing to give 100%. That’s what Aldi look for. Moving into a Manager role during my Placement was a very proud moment for me. It’s the feeling of being able to lead, communicate and make friendships with people that makes it so rewarding. Many of my employees were very new, so it was a big role to develop and train them. I was really grateful for it. You really get out what you put in and the exposure to the business is invaluable”
